Top 10 Beautiful Golf Courses You Need To Play In Portugal
Portugal, and especially the Algarve has become a very popular golf destination over the years. Many of the courses that are available for golfers of every standard have hosted the Portuguese Open for example and it is always nice to play on courses that are regarded as a true test of the best, even if holiday golfers play off forward tees.
Holidaymakers want enjoyment as well and that involves playing well and being able to talk positively about a round just completed, and not about lost balls and few pars. It is worth looking at the top courses when deciding where to play so here are ten to consider:
- Laguna in Vilamoura is certainly one for those who enjoy links golf. It provides a contrast to the other courses around and of course the views of the coast are an added attraction.
- Laranjal in Quinta do Lago is fairly new and has few equals in terms of fairways and beautiful greens.
- Millenium is typical of the region; pine trees and fairly open. A challenge yet good for the leisure golfer.
- Ocean has been open for nearly 50 years. It is a Sir Henry Cotton design with the 11th down to the sea particularly spectacular.
- The Old Course is the fourth Vilamoura course in these first five. It winds through pines and certainly demands accuracy.
- Penina in Portimao has hosted the Open many times. It was one of the first courses in the Algarve to establish itself with tourists and its popularity remains.
- Quinta Do Lago North is a challenging design with undulating greens and strategically positioned bunkers. The four long par 5s are a challenge, especially in the wind.
- Salgados near Albufeira is within a nature reserve and also resembles links golf. It is close to the beach on fairly flat land.
- San Lorenzo in Quinta do Lago is a stunning course with great mountain and sea views.
- Vale de Pinta west of Portimao winds through small valley, over hills and is filled with olive trees.

This is just a selection of Algarve golf courses at a selection of prices. There are others to consider, including some that are just 9 holes but should not be dismissed because of that. The area is fairly compact and all Algarve’s courses are easily accessible, bookable online and certainly worth a visit. A nice thing to think about and investigate a little further.
